The ball gets small on the way to victory
By
Tom Moore
Trailing 2 to 5 at Rock Canyon High School, the Heritage Level III baseball team game roaring back aided by the smooth almost effortless swing of Cameron Glon. Glon hit a three run blast to left center. The line drive just kept climbing spectators noted. As quickly as the ball left the yard, the Rock Canyon lead, which was as much as four runs, had completely evaporated. Erasing the lead was one thing, holding the opponent down and scoring some more for a young team was quite another.
Seth Cirbo had been on the hill since the 4th inning. He was efficient, throwing strikes to balls at almost a two to one clip. If Rock Canyon was going to get on base, they were going to have to earn it. It became apparent that Seth and the defense could do their jobs but could the offense do its? With the score tied in the top of the 7th, and no one aboard, Wil Nickell came to the plate . Wil struggled earlier in the game with patience and therefore getting himself into unfavorable counts. That approach converted Nickell's power stroke into a defensive one. This at bat for Nickell was much different. Wil wasn't pressing; he was patient. Ball one, then ball two, strike one, hittable but not his pitch, ball three, and then with the count in Nickell's favor the pitcher had to come to him. That was a mistake. Wil stroked that pitch at least 200 feet up and 350 feet out over the left center wall. That gave Heritage a one run lead, which Seth Cirbo and the defense held onto in the bottom of the 7th.
After a rough start this season, this win marks the fourth win in a row for the squad. We look forward to closing the season on an up note tomorrow.
